SLIDE OF THE WEEK

Chicago Freedomland Fire

The legendary Chicago Fire of 1871 was one of the star attractions at Freedomland USA. The short-lived early American history theme park was located just thirty minutes from the heart of New York City in the Bronx. It opened in 1960 and closed in 1964.

The park was laid out in the shape of the United States and was four times the cost and size of Disneyland, its obvious inspiration and model for success. Several attractions bore a sticking resemblance to those found 3000 miles away at the Magic Kingdom. What a coincidence!

SLIDE OF THE WEEK

JFK Airport, 1964

A pilot stands waiting for a ride. Five station wagons including a black ’63 Ford Falcon Squire and white ’64 Dodge crowd the loading and unloading zone. Suitcases sit on the curb. Yes, a typical airport scene with one exception - the terminal is straight out of a sci-fi fantasy.

SLIDE OF THE WEEK

Popeye Macy's Parade ballon

A giant skyward helium-filled Popeye balloon tethered with many strings and a small army of earthbound wranglers. Just part of an annual tradition of parading balloon sculptures down Broadway that began in 1927.

SLIDE OF THE WEEK

NYC Worlds Fair 1939

Going through other people old slides is a quite a treasure hunt. After a dozen years of collecting and looking through zillions I’ve been fortunate to find hundreds and hundreds of amazing images. But since the beginning I’ve been hoping to find slides taken at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Kodachrome slide photography was brand knew at the time but I knew that eventually I’d come across some slides that somebody took there - and last week it finally happened!!! This is one of the slides.
