About ten or eleven years ago curiosity got the best of me and I decided that I just had to see the house that my mother grew up in in Compton. My grandparents moved out of it when I was five and I hadn't seen it since. So I looked up the address in the Thomas Guide and headed over there.

I have a special affection for the fabled city of Compton. Long before it became famous as a hot bed of hip-hop culture my mother grew up there in the 40s and 50s when it was just a typical working class suburban city. My grandmother was a housewife and my grandfather worked at the nearby shipyards.
