The Theme Building rocks my world, always and without fail. Nothing reaches out and says, “Yooou’ve arriiived” in Los Angeles quite like this iconic, sci-fi styled superstar.

In 1961, it gracefully landed on earth as the centerpiece and crowning touch of the ultra modern jet-age expansion of LAX. Much more than just an airport accessory, the space age structure houses a non-revolving, but helluva-view restaurant, and up top there’s an observation deck with an even better view. Who knew?

JFK Airport, 1964

A pilot stands waiting for a ride. Five station wagons including a black ’63 Ford Falcon Squire and white ’64 Dodge crowd the loading and unloading zone. Suitcases sit on the curb. Yes, a typical airport scene with one exception - the terminal is straight out of a sci-fi fantasy.

Atlanta International Airport

Two businessmen toting briefcases have just arrived. From the bias-cut control tower down, this is a perfect ultra-modern mid-century scene. A T L A N T A marks the spot; a boxy building dressed in stripes; streetlights with dinosaur necks, giant lasagna noodle roofline, elevated streets and covered sidewalks. The turquoise and white color scheme is perfectly coordinated. Even the sky matches...
