Humorist Phoenix takes a Disneyfied look at the city; All ears in L.A.
Story by Jeff Favre
Downtown Los Angeles tends to get overlooked by visitors, with most of them quickly popping in and out to catch a play or see a museum exhibit — and nothing else.
But Charles Phoenix — a humorist and professional tour guide/showman — sees downtown with such childhood wonderment that to him it rivals the most magical place on Earth. So he created the Disneyland Tour of Downtown Los Angeles.
If he’s true to his word, his next downtown tour, beginning at 11 a.m. Feb. 27, might be the last chance to learn from a man who knows his stuff about some of the city’s most unusual and kitschy places.
“I’ve been doing this tour since 2004,” said Phoenix, who also conducts slide shows featuring perhaps the world’s largest Kodachrome slide collection. “I used to do it a few times a year. It’s not an easy tour to do, but people keep begging me to do it again. I’ve said the last few times that it would be the last one, and I really think this one will be it.”
