Greetings from Galco’s, L.A.’s world class soda pop shop superstore!
While gathering soda pops to mix Poptails and to flavor and color my first ever 7-layer Soda Pop Rock Cake, (which I’ll be serving Sunday, July 22 at Galco’s Summer Soda Tasting event), I share a special soda poppy moment with the King of Pop, John Nese, the guiding light of Galco’s.
Almost 20 years ago, John transformed his family’s nearly 100-year-old Italian market in L.A.’s Highland Park neighborhood into a soda pop palace. The word got out. Sparkling sugary beverage seekers travel from Earth’s farthest reaches to embrace the biggest and most dazzling selection of heritage and boutique brand soda pops this side of the Mississippi. Vintage candies, a world of beer and a big “Blockbuster” sandwich counter round out John’s friendly bill of fare.
Galco’s is one of those rare places that when you walk in the door you ask, “What decade am I in?” It’s our kind of place — homespun and family run.

It’s two or more sodas mixed and served with a candy studded swizzle stick! Cheers!
“What is a 7-Layer Soda Pop Rock Cake?”
The latest crafty confection concoction cake from the Charles Phoenix Test Kitchen is seven layers of cake each flavored and colored with a different soda pop then stacked and finished with dandy candies and peppered with pop rocks! YUM!
