LA County Fair Queen Judging, Pomona, CA 1955

LA County Fair Queen Judging, Pomona, CA 1955

This is the “flat on your back, put your legs up grab your buttocks” pose. May the fairest of them all wear the crown and cape.

Southern Californians are very lucky because the LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIR is on NOW! Did you know it’s the BIGGEST and most WONDERFUL county fair on earth. And there really are SO many things to see and experience! Every year I recommend the gigantic classic kitsch fest to even my snootiest friends - and they love it too!!! And if you think the fair is too tacky for you- think again - really! I’m here to tell you it is Southern California’s BEST KEPT SECRET!!! I cannot recommend it enough. It’s an endless wonderland of mesmerizing things to see- something for everyone!

The uber-grand scale arts and crafts, photography, hot rod, fried-food, pop-culture, miracle product, gadget, Ferris wheel, railroad, garden and barnyard showcase and, SO much more, is set in a treasure trove of vintage architecture, public art, neon signs, landscaping and unique permanent attractions from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. The historic fairgrounds are in Pomona (yes, named for the Roman Goddess of fruit), the same site where it all began 85 years ago in 1922. This is a “Southern Californialand” tradition of the highest order.

Make sure to get there early and plan to stay late so you can see it all. PLEASE don’t forget to bring your camera - it’s a photographer’s paradise, your wallet - it’s a shopper’s paradise and your appetite for all things fatty-salty-sweet and deliciously deep-fried. ENJOY!!!

Your imagination will be inspired and your spirit will soar!

Please send me YOUR fair comments/recommendations!!!

Here’s to THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY FAIR and you!!!

  1. Donna Telles Says:

Holy mackeral, what are the judges actually judging here?!? How wickedly scandalous!!!

  2. Annie Says:

Two words: COMPETITIVE TABLESCAPING.If you go to the fair this year, friends, you simply must seek out the Tablescaping area. It’s usually in the hall where Arts & Crafts contests are held. Never disappoints.

  3. Raul Says:

Is this the Pilates portion of the competition?

  4. Ron Chapman Says:

The judges must have been borrowed from the proctology exhibit.

  5. Jim Says:

This is hilarious. Look at the guy “behind” the ladies..what’s he doing there!? LOL
I guess from the front their legs are being judged, but wouldn’t that have been easier all around if they just stood up?

  6. Kathy Says:

This is great! Notice the pervy judge who positioned himself behind all of the girls! Was it his idea that they pose this way?? Sheesh, the things girls will do for a crown…

  7. Heinz Says:

    Sexy women!

  8. Rosemary Kuhl Says:

    WOW!!!

I was only 5 years old when this was going on.
    Those were some beauties HUH?
Thanks for showing the real “Girls”!!!!

  9. Bijou Mondrian Says:

TABLESCAPING?! Is that what this is called?

  10. MBK Says:

We’ve only been once but loved it! You must try the deep fried Snickers bar–a melted pile of chocolate, caramel yumminess. We shared one between four people–just right. There’s also a homemade ice cream shop at the back near the cows. (I forget the name–Dr. Bob’s?) Before all the eating, though, check out the classic fair rides. They may not be the modern engineering marvels that today’s roller coasters are, but they are pure fun. Ride the zipper and you can read decades of lovers’ grafitti while spinning upside down in a little metal cage with torn vinyl upholstery. The ferris wheel gives a fantastic view of the whole fair, and there are three different giant slides. It’s the perfect day out for your inner child!

  11. SAm VanBibber Says:

I love the folks that are “holding up” the girles legs!Wonder how long they had to pose like that?! lololololI have never understood the girlie magazines with that same pose. So unatural and wicked!

  12. Christine Says:

Why not just take the photo from the other side of the table!? That’s what everyone is really thinking…especially SassyJudge on the butt end of the view. Great slide!

  13. Frank Pinto Says:

Love the site! I personally collect old 8mm film I can find at yardsales, flea markets etc. You find some interseting things!

  14. Goddess of Pomona Says:

Don’t miss the “just squeezed” chocolate milk at Fairview Farms, the environmental magician, the habitat for humanity house building exhibit, the 4H animal pageants. just to name a few.

  15. Marty Biniasz Says:

    Love your site. Thank you!

  16. Lea Anne Locke Says:

Holy crap!!! Are they checking virginity here or what??? Where are the speculums??

Love the ones holding the girl’s legs up!

    I’m gasping with laughter here…
