My Holiday Hero, 2012

Marty Sumrall poses with his yard filled with handmade Christmas decorations

Out-of-work contractor turned holiday yard decor artist extraordinaire, Marty Sumrall is my holiday hero for 2012!

I discovered Marty’s whimsical work by chance while meandering through Riverside, CA in search of classic and kitschy local places to photograph and include in my recent Riverside holiday show.

Between the vintage neon signs, fragrant orange groves, classic drive-in theaters, fun folk art environments and legendary Mission Inn, Riverside was a field trip tour de force!

But the big surprise of the day turned out to be Marty’s pop-up dirt lot studio and showroom gallery which is generously populated with colorful selection of Santas, snowmen, candy canes, reindeer, Grinches, elves and, my favorite, Marty’s version of the abominable snowman.

I thought this type of old school holiday “dad” art was pretty much extinct. But no! Marty Sumrall is keeping the tradition of one-of-a-kind, hand-painted, jigsaw-cut, plywood yard art alive and well.

If you are anywhere near Riverside, don’t miss his delightful display at the northwest corner of Van Buren and the 91 Fwy. The experience is sure to inspire your imagination and make your holiday spirit will soar!

Cheers to Marty Sumrall, his holiday yard art and YOU !!!

When I saw this, I immediately thought of they jigsaw plywood Christmas art my dad and our neighbor made to decorate their adjoining yards in the late 50′s, early 60′s. So funny to see you call it “dad art.” It needs to make a comeback – so much better than those nasty ugly inflatables that spend the daylight hours looking like a pile of laundry in the yard!
