Meds, Make-up and Booze, SoCal, 1966

Parking lot for Hy-Lo drug store

Color blocks and smart signage give subtle space-age style to this modest mid-century strip mall somewhere in SoCal.

Among the all-American driving machines resting in the parking lot, a Volkswagen bus stands out as the lone foreign car. The oh-so sensible Rambler coupe upfront is dyed to match the drug store.

Hy-Lo has to be the ultimate name for a store that sells drugs. Sounds like a warning for what happens when you take too many.

But Hy-Lo isn’t all about drugs. Cosmetics get co-star billing. Ed’s Liquor is right next-door. How convenient, especially for the ladies. They can do their one-stop shopping for meds, make-up and booze!

Here’s to space-age drug stores, Hy-Lo Drugs and YOU!

Hy-Lo isn’t one I’m familiar with in the area, compared to Thrifty, Sav-on, and Owl

Wow! As soon as I saw this photo, I thought to myself, “I have been in that store!” It’s on Garden Grove (or Westminster) Blvd. In the late 1980′s, I worked for a pharmaceutical company and that store was on my route. At the time, the store seemed to be in the wrong century with it’s brightly painted promotional signs and dated signage with the inside to match. Actually, the whole shopping center was run down compared to the others around it. I wonder if it is still there?

I loved the Flickr photos that Christine shared. Lots of shopping memories!
