Backyard Kings, SoCal, 1961

Guys in hawaiian shirts and king crowns

It’s a rare pair of gents who sit side by side in matching mod patio chairs while sporting matching Hawaiian shirts AND smart party crowns!

Since when do men like to dress alike and pretend to be royal twins?

Matchy, matchy, matchy always makes for a fun photo opp!

This is one of my all time fave slides! Of course in my new retro slide show, Pools, Patios ‘n’ BBQs, along with dozens more amazing images celebrating mid-century SoCal backyard life and style
- Sat morn, Feb 18th 10am at Palm Springs Museum.

Yep, we had those chairs in the early 60′s!

    Maybe it’s a Father’s Day celebration?!

Oh – my, my, my-!! And I thought once we became old enough to “dress ourselves” we’d run fast and far from ever dressing alike. (Shows what I know). Perhaps the ‘gents’ and their fabulous crowns became the inspiration for the Burger King…

That whole scene simply screams late 1950′s-early 60′s: the matching shirts, the scalloped precast concrete garden “edging”, the lovely cinder block wall, the spotty floral plantings and the lawn in varying degrees of condition – and yes, those wonderful chairs. Sigh.
