Culture Club Chernobyl Cherpumple
Cherpumple Test Kitchen creation, submitted by Tracy Kunzler

We fell in love with both Charles and the genius of his Cherpumple and felt compelled to make it for the one year anniversary celebration of our Culture Club. Our Culture Club consists of 14 women who try out something “cultural” each month. We’ve gone to wine tastings, listened to ghost stories, paddle-boarded, tasted wine, toured art, decoupaged, tried wine = all sorts of things. We also formed a “REACH” team, reading to children in shelters and supplying them with books and craft projects in an effort to encourage reading. Anyhoo…we thought there would be no other dessert worthy of celebrating one year of cultured living and good deeds other than the Cherpumple. (It was also one member’s birthday.) We made one substitution – we cooked the cherry pie in CHOCOLATE cake. We had a team of three – each baking one layer and made butter-cream cheese frosting for it. We brought the components to the party to assemble there as part of the fun. We used 9″ pans, as our pies

Sorry, but the cherry pie does not look like it is cooked in vanilla batter. Its chocolate.
This was my second Cherpumple attempt and I am determined to work at it until I nail the dismount!! I actually was very hopeful this year as I de-tinned each layer and had an actual cake for each. However, there was undone batter at the top center of at least two layers as I found whilst frosting like I meant it and as I started the third and final layer………………thar she goes, over she went. Most think I am nuts, but now it is a “thing” and I MUST get it. Everyone says it tastes great even in the pile. And the cake I made with the leftover batter was lovely. I am so close! I think maybe I need to overbake the layers, and/or get bigger cake pans as the pictures here show more side clearance than I had between cake and pie. Send any suggestions as I am making a Christmas Cherpumple even if it kills me! (which it just may!)
Thanks for posting this Charles! I think it got cut off, but we wanted to add that we absolutely LOVED the idea of setting the Cherpumple on fire using lemon extract, so set ours abalze! (You could taste it and it made the dessert extra-yummy!) Anyhoo…we think any time you can increase the odds of big, strong firemen coming to your aid, well that makes a dessert EXTRA delicious! Thanks for your culinary genius!
