Edith and Her Wares, Heath Ceramics, Sausalito, CA, 1950s
Pottery pioneer, Edith Heath inspects freshly fired stacks of plates, bowls, ashtrays, and covered casseroles each marked with her legendary name. Everything in the room has a distinctive warm glow including Edith. Her cool blue bustier and plaid summer skirt combo are as timeless as her ceramic creations.
Today, sixty years later, Heath Ceramics is one of the few remaining mid-century American potteries still in existence. Edith died at the age of 94 in 2005 but thankfully her distinctive tableware and architectural tile are being made in Sausalito, California, the old fashioned way just as they have been since she began in 1949. Every piece is a California cultural treasure to behold. There is no question about that!
Please join me to celebrate the legend of Heath Ceramics and the opening of their spectacular new Los Angeles store and gallery with a
GRILLED CHEESE PATIO PARTY, THURS, AUG 20, 6-8pm, 7525 Beverly Blvd LA, CA 90036… FREE!

Here’s to Edith Heath and her Ceramics and YOU!

Mom was given one of these Heath bowls as a wedding present decades ago.
She makes the greatest HUNKY SOUL FOOD in it!
For the un-initiated or “possibly-offended”…
“HUNKY SOUL FOOD” is a rich, pasty, carb & dairy loaded meal. It consists of chopped boiled potatoes, wide-bodied egg noodles, cottage cheese, and probably a couple of Mom’s “Secret HUNGARIAN ingredients”.
I remember the old HEATH CANDYBARS too! To this day I can’t eat one of the really deliciously crunchy, toffee bars. Why? In 1960 the top-hatted Ladmo of the “Wallace & Ladmo Show” in Phoenix, Arizona… joked about “how awful” thier sponsor’s candybar was!
Lad was the only one that could comfort me just weeks later after my 5 year-old playmate died behind me in the collapsed ditch we were running through in the schoolyard of Justine Spitalny Elementary School.
We started purchasing Heath “2nds” at the Sausalito factory in about 1972. We purchased 12 dinner plates @ $5 each, a huge investment then. We eventually added 12 lunch plates, 12 dessert plates, 4 cereal bowls. Later we added a casserole. Just recently we purchased mugs (each costing the equivalent of 4 of our original dinner plates). We still love the clean basic look of the dinnerware and know it will be in the family forever.
I’m so jealous… I wish I lived in CA for events like this! I didn’t learn about Heath Ceramics until the late 90s and have never had the $$. Love them and this CP event…whoa, a grilled cheese patio party! Was it a bomb party!?
