Flaming Astro Weenie Pineapple, From My Kitchen, 2007

Astro Weenie Tree with pinapple and candles

In the tradition of the Astro Weenie Ball and the Astro Weenie Christmas Tree I oh-so proudly present to you…THE FLAMING ASTRO WEENIE PINEAPPLE! Arrive at a party with this in hand and, yes, you will be the belle of the ball! Or have it as a centerpiece at your next TIKI PARTY! Or present it in place of a birthday cake. The ASTRO WEENIE PINEAPPLE is perfect for any festive occasion!

Shopping list

  • 1 attractive pineapple
  • 1 can of pineapple chunks
  • 1 package of cocktail weenies
  • 3 drops yellow food coloring
  • 1 jar of maraschino cherries
  • multi-colored toothpicks
  • kabob skewers
  • birthday cake candles

Begin by frying up the cocktail weenies in your favorite skillet until they they smell up the whole house. Breathe deep cocktail weenies smell really good. Gobble down a few. They taste good too!

Trim any brown off of the pineapple top. Drain the pineapple chunks overnight. Toss them in a bowl with three drops of yellow food coloring. (Otherwise they will look way too dull next to the Maraschino cherries!)

Try to contain your gasps of joy as you skewer the pineapple chunks and Maraschino cherries with multi-colored toothpicks and carefully place them in a spiral pattern wrapping all around the pineapple base.

Now the crowing touch. Skewer a cherry, pineapple chunk and weenie on the non sharp end of the kabob skewer. (Too bad they aren’t multi colored! Oh well.) Skewer the weenie just half way so you can stick the birthday cake candle on the other side. Stick the candle/weenie/pineapple chunk/maraschino cherry tipped kabob skewer in the pineapple top as you see I’ve done.

Have a someone or two help you light the candles. Then for proper presentation turn off the lights. Clutch the bottom of the pineapple in the palm of your hand and hold it up like the statue of liberty holds the flame. You are so Americana!

Here’s to my ASTRO WEENIE PINEAPPLE, your ASTRO WEENIE PINEAPPLE and YOU!

I have made no less than 10 of these since finding this on your site years ago. I have often gone sans flames and sans weenies, but for Superbowl 2012, I did the complete set up and it was fantastic. Thanks for your brilliant, fruity invention.

  5. I simply must have one of these at my next party. Creating one of these just went on my bucket list!

I’ve got two kids’ birthday parties coming up- if I could find some way of using the toothpicks so the whole affair wasn’t so bristly & maybe scratch the kids, I think this would be just the ticket! WOW would they ever love it- of course the parents would think I am insane, but that is going to happen anyways- What a great recipe! A great dramatic presentation, for so little effort, hooray!!!

I love seeing color photos of what this country was like in the 50s and 60s!

  12. Monica says:

Maybe if you soak the skewers in some food coloring of red, green, Blue and yellow and let dry you can have different colored skewers!!!!!!

    I absolutely LOVE this

    I am truly a fan.

  15. Ron Garcia says:

Charles you have outdone yourself once again!! My girlfriend and I are in agreement – which is rare-j/k!! – we think that the Astro Weenie Pineapple is just plain and simply too good looking and cool to eat BUT we will put one together for our upcoming Tiki Party at the end of the month. I promise I won’t take all the credit for this great creation!!

Keep up the awesome work and look forward to another slide show in Brea

That is truly a thing of beauty! Now I’m going to have to throw a party just to have an excuse to make one. Thanks for the recipe Charles.

  18. Thomas says:

“Flaming Astro Weenie” was my nickname for my ex.

  19. JoAn Burdick Gottlieb says:

I love this idea — and since our son is involved with the Rocket and Research group as well as the Pyrotechnic National Group, this will be perfect, and will put sparklers in the end of each weenie — then will be spectacular with all lit.

    Thanks mucho, Jo Mama

  20. Chris Carnaghi says:

Mariachi,Matador or Buck Owens? You decide. Great shot of you Charles! This Tiki Ball thingy is pretty killer dude. It’s like Christmas in August. Now if we can figure out a way to make them grow like that. Martha has got nothing on you my friend. Now we just need to get you a deal at K-mart, so the world can have Mariachi suit madness. I want one !

  21. Marie says:

Charles, you have truly outdone yourself this time. The only thing missing is a shot of you, with the flaming tikinapple held aloft, in the classic SOL pose. Can we expect that next?? Please?

  22. Miss Sharon says:

    Mr. Clever Pineapple Charles!

Simply: This is a site to behold.

Truly: Emily Post would launch herself across the room and give you a bear hug for creating such a wonder. She would then deem this, “Fine use of pineapple, and festive to boot!”

    xoxo!
