I just ran accross this picture/webpage. This picture and one of Cliftons's indoors brought back memories. Clifton's was my 2nd job while in high school and before I went into the military 1963 -1964. Jimmy Rodes was the organist at least for several years at Cliftons. Ken Kitchem was the manager, Hans Ewalt, and Jim Schnook were the junior manager's at that time (last name spelling may be wrong). I would say that about 80% to 90% of the people that worked there were part-time high school and college students. It was a fun time.

I'm a "Baby Boomer". I definately remember the Eastland Shopping Center. When it was completed it killed a lot of local city downtown businesses including my hometown of El Monte. I mostly miss the Coffee Dans across the freeway (GREAT hot fudge sundaes), and the Bob's Big Boy in the Eastland complex. Gone are the days, huh?

Steve,
I CANNOT believe that of all of the places n SoCal to remember you mentioned the Christmas Store that was on the north side of the West Covina section of the San Bernardino FWY in the sixties. I have a vivd memory of the multi-colored huge round ornaments painted against a dramatic black backdrop. I NEVER think of Christmas without thinking of that place!!! Sure would love to see a pic of that place! ...Charles Phoenix

Oh, the great memories of the Eastland shopping mall. As a kid from Ontario, we would drive over Kellogg hill and once at the top, there it was in all its splendor! Like Emerald city from the Wizardof Oz. Does anyone remember the Christmas store that was independent of the stores at the mall? It was located on the lot next to the freeway (I-10) and had multicolored Christmas balls painted on the exterior? Apples in Yucaipa's Oak Glen, Mt Baldy and the Valley Drive-in in Ontario that had cages of monkeys you could visit before the movie started. LOL It was great!

Love your website and this Slide of Eastland, I and my girlfriends had just or was about to graduate from Baldwin Park HS, class of 1957. Many a Saturday, we would go shopping at the two best dress stores there. Spent all our paychecks after we were working. My Sister home was in Covina so we were always shopping at the Eastland!!! Lot of good memories.

Robyn,

I was just talking about the man who came around with the horse-drawn cart. I think 6-8 kids could sit on the benches of the cart. He charged a nickel for a ride and at the end of the ride, he gave you candy. For some reason, I seem to remember getting a Sugar Daddy sucker. If you are a member of Facebook, there is a group you can join from West Covina and we talk about all the things we remember growing up in West Covina.

We lived on Sandia St or Ave near Orangewood elementary school. We always ate at Cliftons after church on Sundays, or Bob's Big Boy. I remember their Cherrie Orange drinks, Patty Melts, Hamburgers, Malts, Sundaes..yum. I live in New Zealand now, so it's fun to reminisce. Also, how can you ever forget the Helms Bakery trucks. They were heaven on wheels. I guess we remember because it was a treat to get to go to Cliftons, or Bob's Big Boy or have Helms Bakery. Does anyone remember the Red School House (I went to that Preschool). Also in the neighborhood we had an old guy with a horse and wagon who used to give rides to the kids for a fee and of course we would all remember the Pony Pictures. The guy who would come around to your house and you could dress up as a cowboy/cowgirl and he would take your photo.
Thanks for the website and memories.
