I grew up my first 9 years of my life in Covina, and I remember well Cliftons Cafeteria, Coffee Dans, The Huddle all the great stuff that made that period of time great. What a great photo, brings back a lot of good memories. Someone on this page posted about Helms Bakery! When we moved to Ventura when I was 10 or so, we had the Helms Bakery man drive in our neighborhood in his Woody Van...geez, where have all the good things like that gone!

Does anyone remember the giant Easter egg that was always next to Sees candy at Easter time? You could walk inside and visit the Easter bunny. That was huge for me! Eastland was the best for a kid growing up in Covina and West Covina.

My parents also took me to Clifton's when I was young lad, making the same trek from Ontario. My mother said she like going there because "the always smiled when they brought the mop!" Oh, and I always had the macaroni and cheese - a bright yellow coagulated mass of childhood goodness!

I love this picture. My dad worked at the Long's Drug Store at Eastland and the house I was born in was right across the street.

I remember how excited I was when the Christmas tree got switched on for the season. I loved seeing it every night!

As for those who have fond memories of Coffee Dan's...I have a memory of Coffee Dan's, and in retrospect, it makes me laugh, but when it happened I was not amused!

One time when I was 5 or 6, my family and I went there for dinner and I ordered a chocolate milk, which was made by mixing milk with chocolate syrup.

I got to the bottom of my chocolate milk and there was a big ol' glob of chocolate that started sliding down my glass. Mmmm! Then, I realized that inside that big ol' glob of chocolate was a big ol' ROACH!!!

I put the glass down and started crying. My older brother, realizing what had happened, started laughing, which made me cry even more. I think they only took the chocolate milk off the bill. Thanks a lot, Coffee Dan's!

I just ran accross this picture/webpage. This picture and one of Cliftons's indoors brought back memories. Clifton's was my 2nd job while in high school and before I went into the military 1963 -1964. Jimmy Rodes was the organist at least for several years at Cliftons. Ken Kitchem was the manager, Hans Ewalt, and Jim Schnook were the junior manager's at that time (last name spelling may be wrong). I would say that about 80% to 90% of the people that worked there were part-time high school and college students. It was a fun time.

I'm a "Baby Boomer". I definately remember the Eastland Shopping Center. When it was completed it killed a lot of local city downtown businesses including my hometown of El Monte. I mostly miss the Coffee Dans across the freeway (GREAT hot fudge sundaes), and the Bob's Big Boy in the Eastland complex. Gone are the days, huh?

Steve,
I CANNOT believe that of all of the places n SoCal to remember you mentioned the Christmas Store that was on the north side of the West Covina section of the San Bernardino FWY in the sixties. I have a vivd memory of the multi-colored huge round ornaments painted against a dramatic black backdrop. I NEVER think of Christmas without thinking of that place!!! Sure would love to see a pic of that place! ...Charles Phoenix

Oh, the great memories of the Eastland shopping mall. As a kid from Ontario, we would drive over Kellogg hill and once at the top, there it was in all its splendor! Like Emerald city from the Wizardof Oz. Does anyone remember the Christmas store that was independent of the stores at the mall? It was located on the lot next to the freeway (I-10) and had multicolored Christmas balls painted on the exterior? Apples in Yucaipa's Oak Glen, Mt Baldy and the Valley Drive-in in Ontario that had cages of monkeys you could visit before the movie started. LOL It was great!

Love your website and this Slide of Eastland, I and my girlfriends had just or was about to graduate from Baldwin Park HS, class of 1957. Many a Saturday, we would go shopping at the two best dress stores there. Spent all our paychecks after we were working. My Sister home was in Covina so we were always shopping at the Eastland!!! Lot of good memories.
